On Monday, August 17, 2020, Governor Cuomo announced that Gym and Fitness Centers could reopen on August 24, 2020 at 33% capacity with strict health and safety standards in place. Guidelines issued apply to fitness activities and facilities, including, but not limited, to standalone, hotel, residential, and office gyms and fitness centers, gyms and fitness centers in higher education institutions, yoga/Pilates/barre studios, boxing/kickboxing gyms, fitness boot camps, CrossFit or other plyometric boxes, and other group fitness classes (e.g., spin, rowing, dancing).

The New York State Department of Health has stated that Nursing Homes and Adult Care Facilities offering fitness programs must follow the Interim Guidance for Gyms and Fitness Centers.  The guidelines discuss areas of Physical Distancing; On-Site Activity; Air Handling Systems; Protective Equipment; Hygiene, Cleaning and Disinfecting; Communication and Screening. The State will be working closely with the local health departments to monitor compliance with the guidelines.
