IPCO Extension, Renewals & Updates

Lisa Volk and Jackie Pappalardi in Clinical & Quality

Due to the COVID pandemic, AHCA is extending the expiration date of the specialized training certificate for IPCO by three months for all IPCO 1 certificate holders whose certificates expire in 2020. Therefore, the initial July 2017 group of certificate holders will not need to renew their certificates until October 2020. The August group will have an extension until November and so on through the final group whose certificates expire in December 2020. AHCA will determine later this year whether extensions will be granted to those IPCO certificate holders whose certificates expire in 2021.

There are two options for certificate renewal. Option one is to register for and successfully complete the IPCO competency renewal exam with a score of 80 or greater. The cost of the IPCO certificate renewal exam is $200 for members and $450 for non-members. No CEs are awarded for taking the renewal exam.

Individuals are permitted three attempts to pass the recertification exam. Current certificate holders will receive a new certificate good for another three years upon successfully completing the renewal exam with a score of 80 or greater.

If they fail all three attempts, they will be required to register for IPCO Version 2 online course and complete that program and exam with a score of 80 or greater to receive a new certificate. AHCA/NCAL members who fail the certificate renewal exam three times will receive a $100 credit toward the purchase of the IPCO Version 2 online course. Non-members who fail the recertification exam three times will receive a $50 credit toward the purchase of the IPCO Version 2 online course.

The second option for certificate renewal is skip the certificate renewal exam and simply register for and take the IPCO Version 2 course and pass the final exam with a score of 80 or greater.

AHCA/NCAL is notifying all IPCO certificate holders whose certificates expire in 2020 of their options for certificate renewal and the 3-month extension. AHCA/NCAL is advising individuals to keep a copy of this extension notification with their original 2017 certificates should they be asked by surveyors to provide documentation of their specialized training to be designated Infection Preventionists.
